How to Point Your Domain to Your Hosting

Updated 23 June 20260 views2 min read

This article helps you make a domain that's registered with another provider show your new website hosted with us. You'll do this by updating where your domain points.

Before you start

You'll need the connection details for your hosting. These are in your welcome email, and if you can't find them, our support team can send them to you. There are two ways to point your domain to us:

  • Nameservers (recommended) — hands all of your domain's DNS over to us, so you can manage records in your control panel.
  • A record — points just your website to our server's IP address while leaving DNS managed at your current provider.

Use the nameserver method unless you have a reason to keep DNS elsewhere.

Step 1 — Find your connection details

  1. Open your welcome email and look for the nameservers (usually two or more addresses) and your server IP address.
  2. If you can't find them, open a support ticket and ask us for your nameservers and IP address.

Step 2 — Log in to your domain registrar

  1. Go to the website of the company where your domain is registered.
  2. Log in to your account there.
  3. Find the settings for the domain you want to point to us.
  1. Look for a Nameservers or DNS setting for your domain.
  2. Remove the existing nameservers.
  3. Enter the nameservers from your welcome email, one per field.
  4. Save your changes.

Step 4 — Or update your A record instead

If you'd rather keep DNS at your current provider, skip the nameserver change and update your A record instead.

  1. Open the DNS or DNS records area at your current registrar.
  2. Find the A record for your domain (the host is often @ or your bare domain name).
  3. Change its value to the server IP address from your welcome email.
  4. Save your changes.

Step 5 — Wait for the change to take effect

  1. Allow time for the change to spread across the internet. This is called propagation.
  2. It can take up to 24-48 hours, though it's often much quicker.
  3. Once it's done, your domain will show your new site hosted with us.

Next steps

If your domain still isn't pointing to your site after 48 hours, or you're not sure which values to use, open a support ticket from your account and we'll check it for you.
